SSAT Verbal section — samples of questions

The SSAT includes one 30-minute verbal section, which is composed of 30 synonym questions and 30 analogy questions.  Given the time limit and the number of questions, students have approximately 30 seconds to answer each question.The SSAT includes one 30-minute verbal section, which is composed of 30 synonym questions and 30 analogy questions.  Given the time limit and the number of questions, students have approximately 30 seconds to answer each question.  The questions within the SSAT verbal section will progress in difficulty as a student works his or her way through the section; once the questions switch from synonyms to analogies, the difficulty level will revert back to “easy.”  Because a student loses 1/4 point for each incorrect answer, a student should not make random guesses on the SSAT verbal section.

Synonym Questions – Students must select the answer choice that is closest in meaning to the word given in the question.
Analogy Questions – These questions test a student’s ability to determine relationships between words. Students must select the answer choice that best completes the meaning of the sentence.
