About Exams

ECL is an examination system that has been developed for 15 languages. Examination Center Universal Test has been a test center since 2014 and regularly takes English and German exams. There is also enrollment of candidates for other language exams represented by the system. European Consortium for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Languages is an association of institutions for teaching European languages. Universal Test has become a test center for the ECL international examination system since 2014, see the website of the examination system.

Advantages of ECL exam

  • A single format for ECL language exams
  • ECL certificates have unlimited validity in time

There is no need of taking the exam every time it is necessary to confirm the level of knowledge.

  • ECL is the most affordable international test
  • ECL exams are designed in view of all the advantages and disadvantages of other international tests.

The primary advantages in comparison with other tests are a simplified format and reduced content.

  • Possibility to take separate units of exam

You may obtain a partial certificate for a written (writing + reading) or oral (listening + speaking) block. It is important to note that this certificate does not state whether you passed the second block of the test. Thus, failing one of the blocks will not affect the overall assessment. You just get a certificate for the block that you passed successfully. This doubles the chances for obtaining an ECL certificate.

Is it necessary to get such kind of certificate? Sure it is. The ECL partial certificate is recognized in Europe. For many candidates it is not even required to pass all test assignments. For example, professional translators are only required to obtain a written certificate of the C1 level. Therefore, everything depends only on the purpose for which you need a certificate.

  • Flexible complex evaluating system

If there are not enough points on one part of the ECL test, you have a chance to improve the overall assessment by the second in this block (for writing – reading, for listening – speaking). In this case, the arithmetic mean is calculated. If the score for one of the parts is below 60%, but above 40%, it will simply be added to the partial one and the result will be divided in half. Thus, you can get a certificate if your total result is above 60%.

ECL aims

  • Create a single, reliable and effective system for foreign languages proficiency
  • Guarantee for candidates and employers internationally comparable results and issued certificates without any legal confirmation of them in each country (nostrification)
  • Support and encourage the dissemination of standardized foreign languages courses, promote the teaching of foreign languages to residents of European countries, both in the school system and out-of-school education

The content and volume of ECL tests are established on the basis of serious scientific research results and pilot testing of experimental groups.

ECL exams measure oral and written language skills in everyday communication within standard, professional and personal discourse of different levels of complexity.
